KEEP THE WHOLE WORLD SINGING!

This month our Mid-Atlantic District is really following that injunction. We have contests, contests, contests, contests!

In our inaugural issue of the Hi-Note a couple of weeks ago we brought you the results of the Northern Division contest. We follow up in this issue by recognizing and applauding the achievements of the Atlantic Division champs, Escapade and Bryn Mawr as well as the wonderful performance by Da Capo at the Harmony Sweepstakes National Finals. Their winning the sweeps as well as their selection as audience favorite is a wonderful boost for our hobby.

Coming in quick succession over the next few weeks -- straight to your inbox -- are Hi-Note issues reporting on the Southern and Western Division contests as well as Harmony College/Directors' College East and the International Convention in Kansas City.

Wow! That's a whole lot of chords ringing and ringing. Thank you to all you competitors and singers for keeping this barbershop fan in seventh heaven.

Sincerely,

Roxanne Powell

M-AD Editor

ATLANTIC DIVISION CONVENTION

  atlantic champs

Atlantic Division crowns Bryn Mawr, Escapade

Over 500 people descended on the Sheraton Hotel in Dover, Del. May 20-21 for the 2011 Atlantic Division Convention.  Three hundred and ten competitors appeared in eleven choruses on Saturday and 26 quartets participated in the Friday night session.   2010 International Competitor and 2011 International Qualifier Frank the Dog served as the mic-tester on Friday night and also entertained following the chorus contest and on the Saturday night Show of Champions.  Their "push out with the dogs" set following the chorus contest was one of the highlights of a delightful weekend full of fun, fellowship, and harmony featuring solid performances, numerous hospitality rooms, and lots and lots of singing throughout the Sheraton hotel.  The weekend featured a stirring MC performance by Anne Bureau (director of Lansdale) on Friday night that set the tone for a weekend full of fun.

When the dust settled, Bryn Mawr, under the direction of Rick Serpico registered a 73.4 score and regained the division championship in a tight contest, besting 2nd place finisher Lansdale (72.8) by 8 points (or just over ½ a point per song per judge).  Both choruses qualified for the Fall District convention and were joined by 3rd place finisher Bucks County (65.8) who was also the Plateau AAA Champion and Ocean County (63.1) as district qualifiers.  Milford, Del. (61.3) was named Most Improved and Red Bank (61.9) rounded out the champion ranks as the Plateau AA Champion.  The division quartet championship was won by Escapade (74.0), followed by Why Not? in second (71.2) and GSQ in third (66.8).

In response to inputs from many members, the Show of Champions started earlier than usual at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night.  As a result, chapter hospitality suites were rolling before 9 p.m. and most folks were able to get a lot of singing and socializing in and still be in bed shortly after midnight.  We plan to try a similar schedule out at the Southern and Western divisions as well and will continue to refine the schedule of events at our conventions based on your feedback.

We have two more division conventions coming up.  May 27-28 for Southern in Reston, Va. and June 4-5 for Western in Camp Hill, Pa.  Immediately following the Western Division convention, the Marriott Hotel in Lancaster will release our room block for reservations and VP for Contest & Judging John Santora will notify all qualifying quartets and determine their intention to appear.  Stay tuned for the results of the next two conventions and a preview of the excitement of the 2011 Fall Convention.

HARMONY SWEEPS CHAMPS

Da Capo quartet

DA CAPO seizes the gold and takes audience fave

A HUGE congratulations goes out to the Mid-Atlantic District quartet Da Capo for their brilliant performance at the Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival National Finals competition last week. Not only did they win the championship, but they walked away with the Audience Favorite award as well. Congrats, gentlemen!

Da Capo had this to say about their experience, "Thank you all for your support and compliments! It was truly an honor to represent our fine region and we are thrilled to bring the "trophy" back to the Mid-Atlantic Region once again!

The competition was fierce and each competitor proved worthy of victory. We are honored to have shared the stage with such amazing groups as Traces, Overboard, The Baudboys, Throat, Brass Farthing, Vybration, and The Brotherhood Singers! We made many friends and look forward to making more as we continue this glorious journey together.

Here's to a cappella music, may it flourish in our lives until we sing our last note."

The Society, The M-AD, Chapters, families and friends all congratulate Ryan Griffith, Tony Colosimo, Joe Sawyer and Wayne Adams all the best as they take off to new heights. Be sure to catch them in Kansas City, too.

LANSDALE YOUTH IN HARMONY GOLF TOURNEY
LANSDALE GOLF PROMO

The Lansdale North Pennsmen Chapter is sponsoring a golf tournament on June 27, 2011, with proceeds to benefit the Harmony Foundation and Youth in Harmony. All are invited to participate, and support the vital youth programs of the Society. It's Lansdale's way of making a commitment to the future of Barbershopping. Chapters and individuals throughout the Mid-Atlantic District are invited to participate, and you don't have to be a good golfer (or even a golfer at all!) to join in and have a good time.

The event will be held at the renowned Indian Valley Country Club, in Telford, PA. Full details are available on the chapter's web site, www.northpennsmen.org. Follow the link for Golf Outing. Individuals or foursomes (Hmm...Quartets?) can sign up to play, and lots of prizes will be awarded. There may even be some singing allowed on the course!

The format will be a "Scramble", so even occasional golfers will have a chance to perform as a member of a winning team!

Golf registrations include lunch and dinner.

HARMONY COLLEGE / DIRECTORS' COLLEGE EAST

Don't miss the fun!

The best weekend of barbershopping in the M-AD is coming to Salisbury, Md., June 16-19.  Harmony College/Directors College-EAST is touted nationwide as one of the top District Schools in the Society.  Participants enjoy excellent classes for individual barbershoppers, top-rate coaching for quartets and choruses (there's still time to come as a chorus!), invaluable training for Directors, two great evening shows, an exciting Youth program, good food and terrific fellowship!

You'll find the perfect combination of music and fun available to you at a great value...only $210 for the whole weekend! How's that for "economic stimulus?"  And you should ask your Chapter if they'll subsidize your attendance as a legitimate Chapter expense.  Whether a student at HCE or DCE, you'll return to them better prepared to positively contribute to your ensemble!

Quartets of all levels find their participation invaluable to enhance their performance.  Directors at all levels and aspiring directors and other music leaders rave about how their skill levels are raised by DCE!  Choruses can't find better one-stop coaching anywhere, all day Friday or all day Saturday - pick one NOW and call Scott!  Individuals can enhance singing skills, learn to arrange or find out how to better contribute to your Chapter's administrative team!

Registration forms can be downloaded at www.midatlanticdistrict.com.

Questions concerning  HCE (and chorus coaching availability) should be directed to Scott at 215-368-8041 or pslward@msn.com

Come on, now, take the time to register today...don't miss the FUN!
