From 1974 to 1983 The Sussex Counts were one of the best-loved and well-known barbershop
quartets on the east coast. After winning the Southern Division Championship in May of 1975,
the “Counts” won the East Central Division Championship in June of 1976 and went on to win
the 1977 Mid-Atlantic District competition. Approximately 37 years of collective barbershop
experience went into that winning performance which was the highlight of a long line of great
achievements including three divisional championships in two divisions, six district contests
in which they never placed lower than sixth, eight international preliminary contests, and three
international contests for which they qualified to represent the Mid-Atlantic District
in New Orleans, Atlanta, and Indianapolis, placing as high as 28th.
The original Sussex Counts Quartet was actually formed in 1969.
After several personnel changes, the championship quartet was made up of two original members –
Ron Allen (tenor) and Jon Lowe (bass). Completing the winning quartet were Jim Marberger (lead)
and Carroll Beard (baritone). When Jon Lowe moved away, the quartet was fortunate to recruit
Larry Manlove (bass) who sang with them until their retirement in 1983.
The Sussex Counts spent most of their weekends traveling and entertaining as headliners
in Chapter shows and clubs up and down the east coast – particularly New York and Pennsylvania.
They appeared in a Community Players’ 1980 production of “The Music Man.”
They are not only remembered for their great musical talent, but also their wonderful stage presence,
humor, and comedic style.
